Moth Damage on an Oriental Rug
To spot moth damage on an oriental rug you need to look closely at the front and back of the rug. The picture above shows moth damage on an Oriental Rug from the pile side. You can see slight pit marks where the pile has been eaten. This is a very good indication that this rug has had a moth problem in the past and may well still be full of moth eggs waiting to hatch.
Once a rug has been infested with moths it becomes very difficult to guarantee complete removal of all moth eggs, even after professional rug cleaning. This is the main problem, because at some stage they will hatch and the resulting larvae will start to destroy your rug. The moth larvae can survive for up to three years before turning into an adult, and in this time can damage a rug beyond the point of worthwhile repair.
Moths will not generally infest clean rugs and in the case of the rug in the image above they have concentrated on eating the wool that has been contaminated with pet urine.
You can treat rugs in the home by applying an insecticide to the front and back of the rug. This will kill any live moth larvae but the residual effect only lasts a few months before reapplication becomes necessary. It will have no affect on removing any eggs.
If we are treating a moth infested rug at our facility we first of all carry out a pre moth treatment which will prevent cross contaminating any other rugs. We then carry out a specialist rug washing process, followed by a post moth treatment which changes the flavour of the wool. If an eggs do hatch out in the future the larvae will be deterred from eating the wool due to the sour taste of the wool. Adult moths looking to lay eggs will also avoid a treated piece due to the undesirable flavour of the wool.
Moth infestations are the most common problem we see in rugs, and it is getting worse. If you think you may have a moth problem then please give us a call on 01276 423150 and we can give you some helpful advice.
