Rayon Fibre Carpet – Rug Cleaning in Cobham
Rayon fibre carpets and rugs offer a substantial challenge to specialist rug cleaning companies. At first glance the fibre can easily be mistaken for real silk and due its lustrous appearance. The rug in the picture above was brought into our rug cleaning facility by a customer from Cobham who was a little worried about having it cleaned. She had noticed that during a previous cleaning attempt the fibres had dried rather stiff, matted and with a certain amount of the sheen had disappeared.
When cleaning a rayon fibre rug certain precautions need to be taken to avoid permanent pile and colour damage. Firstly we will vacuum and dust the rug in the usual way. The standard overnight colour test will be the next step. This will determine the chemistry to be used during the rug cleaning process. Once the rug cleaning technique has been decided we will proceed as quickly as possible to get the rug through the washing steps. After the rug cleaning process has been completed it is very important to make sure that all the fibres are brushed with the nap to avoid any pile distortion. The rug must then be dried very quickly to prevent colour migration and cellulosic browning. We have devised a drying technique that will result in a very shiny rug with lovely soft fibres once again.
Rayon also goes by other names such as artificial silk (art silk), viscose and mercerized cotton. Rayon is basically regenerated, chemically processed cotton. The fibre is far weaker than cotton, especially when wet. The life expectancy of a rug made from this fibre is dramatically reduced, particularly when the rug is walked on frequently.
