Back of a tufted rug

If you’re unsure whether you have a hand knotted rug or not then the best thing to do is check the back.  The image above shows the back of a contemporary tufted rug.  It is not a hand woven rug.  With hand woven rugs the knots and pattern would be clearly visible on the back.

The tufting process, sometimes referred to as hand tufting, means that the yarns are punched into a primary backing.  Latex is then applied to the back of the rug and covered with the material you can see in the above image.

Tufted rugs tend to be cheaper to buy than woven rugs and will not be as durable.  Sometimes the latex used is of poor quality and it’s not uncommon to experience an off-gassing which produces an odour similar to burning rubber.  This odour cannot be removed.
