Chinese Silk Rugs

Chinese Silk
Chinese silk rugs have a history stretching back over two millennia, with their origins rooted in early imperial China and the ancient tradition of sericulture—the cultivation of silkworms for silk production. Their development reflects both native artistry and international influences, brought to China by trade and cultural exchange via the Silk Road.
Silk weaving in China predates documented history, with legends attributing its origins to the wife of Emperor Huang-ti, around 2,600 BCE. The art of making silk was closely tied to the elite and imperial courts, with silk considered a luxury material. The Han Dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) saw the earliest known rug-making, often for practical or ceremonial purposes, using both wool and silk.
Although China’s tradition of silk weaving is ancient, extensive production of silk rugs for export did not emerge until the late 19th and especially 20th centuries. During the 1960s and 1970s, Chinese silk rug production expanded, often drawing inspiration from classical Chinese paintings or even Persian and Turkish motifs. Today, Chinese silk rugs are prized worldwide for their craftsmanship, intricate designs, and enduring cultural significance.
