Caucasian Karabagh Rugs

Caucasian Karabagh Rug
Karabagh rugs have a fascinating history rooted in the Caucasus region, specifically in what was historically known as Karabagh (also spelled Karabakh or Qarabağ), an area that straddles present-day Armenia and Azerbaijan.
These rugs were produced primarily from the 18th century onwards, though the weaving tradition in the region extends back much further. The area was renowned for producing some of the finest and most distinctive Caucasian carpets, with several important weaving centres including Shusha, which became particularly famous for its output.
Karabagh rugs are notable for their unique characteristics that set them apart from other Caucasian weavings. They often feature a longer pile than typical Caucasian rugs and tend to use softer, more muted colours – particularly lovely rose pinks, golds, and blues – in contrast to the bolder, more geometric designs of neighbouring regions. The designs frequently incorporated Persian influences, including floral motifs, medallions, and intricate borders, blended with traditional Caucasian geometric patterns.
The weavers were often Armenian, and the rugs reflect a beautiful synthesis of Persian sophistication with Caucasian boldness. Popular designs included the distinctive “cloudband Kazak” patterns, eagle motifs, and various floral arrangements.
Production flourished particularly in the 19th century but declined significantly following the political upheavals of the 20th century, including the Russian Revolution and subsequent Soviet period. Today, antique Karabagh rugs are highly sought after by collectors for their aesthetic beauty and historical significance.
