Lesghi Star Kazak Rugs

Lesghi Star Kazak (circa 1900)
Lesghi Star Kazak rugs are a distinctive type of Caucasian carpet, highly prized by collectors for their bold geometric designs and vibrant colours. These rugs originate from the Kazak region in the southern Caucasus, which historically encompassed parts of present-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.
The most recognisable feature of Lesghi Star rugs is their central medallion pattern, which consists of a large star-shaped motif—often with stepped or serrated edges—set against a contrasting field. The design typically includes a central cross or star surrounded by smaller geometric elements, creating a striking focal point. The pattern is named after the Lezgin people (also spelled Lesghi), an ethnic group from Dagestan and northern Azerbaijan, though the rugs themselves were woven throughout the broader Kazak region.
These carpets are characteristically woven with a relatively coarse knotting technique, giving them a thick, substantial feel and considerable durability. The wool is typically of excellent quality, often with a lustrous finish. The colour palette tends towards rich, saturated hues—deep reds, navy blues, ivory, and gold are common, often with accents of green or burnt orange.
Lesghi Star Kazaks usually feature a distinctive border system with multiple guard stripes, often incorporating stylised floral or geometric motifs. The overall effect is one of bold graphic impact rather than delicate refinement, which is part of their enduring appeal.
Most antique examples date from the 19th to early 20th century, and genuine pieces from this period are increasingly valuable in today’s market.
