Mahi Tabriz

Mahi Tabriz
Persian Mahi Tabriz rugs are amongst the most exquisite and sought-after carpets in the world, originating from the ancient city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran.
The term “Mahi” means “fish” in Farsi, and these rugs are characterised by their distinctive fish-shaped medallions that form the central design motif. This herati pattern, as it’s also known, features a repeated diamond shape with curvilinear leaves on all four sides, creating an elegant, all-over design that resembles shoals of fish swimming through the carpet.
Tabriz has been a major centre of Persian carpet weaving for centuries, and the city’s weavers are renowned for their exceptional skill and precision. Mahi Tabriz rugs typically feature incredibly fine knotting, often exceeding 300 knots per square inch, which allows for remarkable detail and intricacy in the design. They’re usually woven on cotton foundations with wool or silk pile, though the finest examples may be entirely silk.
The colour palettes tend towards rich, harmonious combinations, with traditional pieces featuring deep reds, navy blues, ivory, and touches of gold or green. The borders are typically elaborate, with multiple guards framing intricate floral scrollwork.
These rugs are prized not only for their beauty but also for their durability and investment value. A well-maintained antique Mahi Tabriz can appreciate considerably over time, whilst new pieces continue to be woven by master craftspeople carrying on centuries-old traditions.
