Persian Malayer Rugs

Persian Malayer
Malayer rugs are a distinctive type of Persian carpet originating from the town of Malayer (also spelled Malair or Malayir) in western Iran, situated between Hamadan and Arak. These rugs have been produced since the late 19th century and are known for their particular character within the broader tradition of Persian carpet weaving.
Malayer rugs typically feature geometric and angular designs, often incorporating repeating boteh (paisley) motifs, Herati patterns, or stylised floral designs arranged across the field. The colour palettes tend towards rich, earthy tones including rust reds, warm browns, deep blues, and ivory, though you’ll also find pieces with brighter colours. The designs are generally more rectilinear and tribal in feeling compared to the curvilinear elegance of some other Persian styles.
These carpets are traditionally woven using a Turkish (symmetrical) knot on cotton foundations, with wool pile that’s often quite lustrous and durable. The weaving quality is generally quite good, sitting in the middle range of Persian rugs in terms of knot density. Malayer rugs often have a slightly longer pile than some neighbouring regional styles, which contributes to their tactile appeal.
One of the appealing aspects of Malayer rugs is their versatility. They’re sturdy enough for everyday use whilst being attractive enough to serve as decorative pieces. They tend to be more affordable than some of the more famous Persian carpet types whilst still offering excellent quality and authentic Persian craftsmanship. Vintage Malayers from the early to mid-20th century are particularly sought after by collectors.
