Persian Meshed

Persian Meshed
Persian Meshed rugs are beautiful carpets from the city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, which is the country’s second-largest city and an important centre of rug production. They’re known for their distinctive characteristics and high quality.
These rugs typically feature rich, vibrant colours with deep reds and blues being particularly common. The designs often include elaborate floral patterns, intricate borders, and central medallions, though you’ll also find all-over patterns and prayer rug designs. The craftsmanship is generally excellent, with a medium to high knot density that creates detailed, precise patterns.
What makes Meshed rugs particularly interesting is their wool quality – the area produces lovely, lustrous wool that takes dyes beautifully. The foundation is usually cotton, though older pieces might have wool foundations. They often have a slightly higher pile compared to some other Persian rugs, giving them a plush, comfortable feel underfoot.
In terms of style, Meshed rugs can vary quite a bit. Some are more traditional and formal with classic Persian motifs, whilst others made for export markets have adapted to Western tastes. You might come across pieces influenced by the famous workshops in the city, such as those of Amoghli or Saber, which are particularly prized by collectors.
They’re generally considered excellent value for money in the Persian rug market – offering very good quality and durability without quite reaching the premium prices of rugs from Isfahan or Nain.
