Persian Afshar

Persian Afshar
What Are Persian Afshar Rugs?
Persian Afshar rugs are traditional tribal carpets that the Afshar people weave with exceptional skill. This Turkic nomadic tribe primarily resides in the Kerman and Azerbaijan provinces of Iran. Furthermore, collectors highly value these rugs for their bold geometric designs, vibrant colours, and superior craftsmanship.
Distinctive Patterns and Designs
Afshar rugs typically showcase striking geometric patterns. Moreover, weavers often incorporate large diamond-shaped medallions, hexagons, or repeating boteh (paisley) motifs into their designs. The patterns tend to be more angular and abstract compared to the curvilinear styles found in Persian city rugs. Additionally, common decorative elements include stylised flowers, animals, and birds, all rendered in a charmingly naive, folk-art style.
Rich Colour Palettes
The colour palette is usually quite rich and warm. Deep reds, navy blues, and ivory predominate, whilst weavers accent these base colours with touches of orange, green, or gold. Traditionally, artisans used natural dyes, which give the rugs their characteristic lustrous, saturated hues that age beautifully over time.
Quality Construction and Materials
Weavers typically create these rugs using high-quality wool on a cotton foundation. However, older pieces might feature woollen warps and wefts. The pile is typically short to medium in height, whilst the knotting is quite dense. Consequently, this results in durable rugs with excellent pattern definition. Afshar weavers use the symmetrical (Turkish) knot rather than the asymmetrical (Persian) knot more common in other Persian rugs.
Sizes and Value
Sizes vary considerably, though smaller formats such as rugs, bag faces, and saddle covers are quite common. These sizes reflect the tribe’s nomadic heritage. Ultimately, Afshar rugs represent excellent value for collectors interested in authentic tribal weaving with strong visual appeal.
