Persian Gabbeh Rugs

Persian Gabbeh
Persian Gabbeh Rugs
Persian Gabbeh rugs represent one of the most distinctive and captivating categories of tribal weaving from Iran. These handwoven pieces originate from the nomadic tribes of southwestern Iran, where centuries of tradition have produced rugs that combine functional durability with artistic spontaneity.
What Does “Gabbeh” Mean?
The term “Gabbeh” derives from the Persian word meaning “raw,” “uncut,” or “natural”, perfectly capturing the essence of these rugs’ unrefined charm and simple aesthetic. This name reflects their traditional construction methods and the deliberately unpretentious approach to design.
Origins and Heritage
Gabbeh rugs originated amongst the Qashqai nomads of southwestern Iran, where for centuries they were woven by tribal women for their own personal use. The rugs were traditionally created by artisans as floor coverings, bedding, bags, and other practical applications. Each piece served as a personal expression of the weaver’s thoughts, dreams, or surroundings, making every rug genuinely unique.
The weaving heritage has been passed down through generations amongst nomadic tribes such as the Qashqai and Luri in Iran’s Fars Province, preserving traditional techniques whilst allowing for individual creativity.
Materials and Construction
Premium Wool
The Qashqai nomads, being shepherds, had ready access to high-quality wool from their sheep, which is hand-spun to give the rugs their characteristic texture and resilience. The wool used in authentic Gabbeh rugs features long fibres, lustre, and beautiful natural variations in shade and character.
The exceptional quality of the wool contributes significantly to the rug’s soft yet resilient feel underfoot, whilst the natural lanolin content helps resist staining and discourages dust mites.
Natural Dyes
The palette of colours achieved using only dyes sourced from natural sources like indigo, madder root, pomegranate, and onion skins is truly remarkable. Traditional vegetable dyes ensure the yarn remains highly pigmented, with these dyes being stable whilst producing beautiful variations in colour even within individual works.
Madder root dyes, derived from the plant Rubia tinctorum, produce a range of warm and cool shades including red, orange, pink, and brown, whilst indigo provides rich blues.
