Silk Rugs: Extraordinary Beauty, Expert Care
Silk rugs represent the pinnacle of the rug maker’s art. Woven from the continuous filament of the silkworm cocoon, they possess a luminous, almost liquid sheen that no other fibre can replicate. The way a silk rug catches and reflects light — shifting from deep, jewel-like tones to pale gold as you move around the room — is what sets these pieces apart from every other type of rug.
What Makes Silk Rugs So Special?
The finest silk rugs originate from Persia, Turkey, China, and India. Qum (or Qom) rugs from Iran are widely regarded as among the most exquisite ever produced, often featuring extraordinarily fine knotting — sometimes exceeding 1,000 knots per square inch — that allows for miniature-like floral, medallion, and pictorial designs of breathtaking detail. Chinese and Hereke silk rugs are equally prized for their refinement and precision.
Many rugs described as “silk” are in fact art silk (artificial silk), typically made from mercerised cotton, viscose, or bamboo fibres. Whilst these can be attractive and far more affordable, they are distinctly different from genuine silk in durability, lustre, and value. A reputable specialist can identify the difference immediately — something worth knowing before cleaning or valuation.
Caring for Silk Rugs in Esher and the Surrounding Area
Silk is a protein fibre, chemically closer to human hair than to plant-based fibres like cotton or jute. This makes it uniquely sensitive. The wrong pH level in a cleaning product, excessive moisture, or aggressive mechanical action can cause permanent damage — fading, fibre degradation, colour bleeding, or irreversible distortion of the pile.
For homeowners in Esher, Cobham, Weybridge, and the wider Surrey area, it is essential to entrust silk rugs only to a specialist with hands-on experience of the fibre. At Oriental Rug Spa, we assess every silk rug individually before any treatment begins, checking for dye stability, pile direction, foundation condition, and any prior repairs.
Our cleaning process for silk rugs uses pH-controlled, fibre-safe solutions applied by hand, with controlled drying to prevent stretching or distortion. The result is a rug returned to you fresh, vibrant, and structurally sound — with its distinctive lustre fully preserved.
