Specialist Care for Oriental Rugs in KT14
The term “Oriental rug” covers hand-made rugs from across Asia. Persian, Turkish, Chinese, Indian and Central Asian rugs all belong to the family. Each tradition uses its own knots, fibres and dyes, so no two types behave in quite the same way.
Many homes in West Byfleet include at least one Oriental rug. You might find a prized piece in a Victorian house near the station, or a newer rug in a family home off Parvis Road. Either way, the rug deserves more than a standard carpet clean. For that reason, we identify the origin and construction of every rug before we choose our method.
What “Oriental” Means for Cleaning
An Oriental rug can be wool, silk, cotton or a blend of all three. It can also be hand-knotted or hand-woven, and its dyes may be natural or modern. Because of this variety, the right method for one rug can ruin another.
For example, a thick wool rug tolerates more water than a fine silk piece. Therefore, we treat each rug as an individual and never apply a single standard process.
Common Issues with Oriental Rugs
Oriental rugs are tough, but they still suffer from everyday wear. We see the same problems again and again in West Byfleet homes.
- Sun fading — bright windows bleach colours unevenly along one side
- Pet hair and dander — fibres trap them deep in the pile, beyond the reach of a vacuum
- Watermarks and tide lines — spills and damp leave rings that spread if left untreated
- Traffic lane wear — hallways and stair runners show thinning where the foundation threads start to appear
- Musty odours — damp rugs hold smells, particularly in older properties with cool, shaded rooms
Why Early Cleaning Saves Money
Dirt acts like fine sandpaper inside a rug. Every footstep drives it further into the fibres, where it cuts and dulls them. As a result, a neglected rug wears out far sooner.
In addition, stains set harder over time. Regular professional cleaning removes soil before it causes lasting harm, and it protects the value of your rug.
Our Oriental Rug Cleaning Process
Preparing Your Rug
- Identification — first, we work out the rug’s origin, fibre and weave, because each needs a different approach.
- Colourfastness testing — next, we test every dye before any moisture touches the rug.
- Deep dust extraction — then we lift trapped grit from the base of the pile.
Washing, Drying and Finishing
- Hand-cleaning — after that, we wash the rug by hand with a solution matched to its fibre type.
- Full rinse — we flush out all residue, so the rug resoils more slowly.
- Careful drying — we dry the rug flat under controlled conditions to keep the weave square and prevent colour run.
- Final finishing — finally, we groom the pile, clean the fringes and inspect the rug before we return it.
