Caucasian Rug Cleaning in Godalming
A Brief Introduction to Caucasian Rugs
Caucasian rugs are among the most striking and instantly recognisable pieces in the world of oriental weaving. Originating from the mountainous Caucasus region — spanning parts of modern-day Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and Dagestan — these rugs are celebrated for their bold geometric patterns, vibrant colour palettes, and tribal motifs passed down through generations of nomadic and village weavers.
Unlike the more curvilinear designs found in Persian rugs, Caucasian pieces favour angular, abstracted forms: stylised animals, botanical shapes, and medallions rendered in striking reds, indigos, ivories, and golds. Well-known sub-groups include Kazak, Shirvan, Karabakh, Kuba, and Gendje rugs, each with distinct regional characteristics in weave density, wool quality, and pattern style.
Woven predominantly from hand-spun wool with natural dyes, genuine antique and semi-antique Caucasian rugs are highly durable but require specialist knowledge to clean safely, particularly where organic dyes are present and prone to bleeding if treated incorrectly.
Why Caucasian Rugs Need Specialist Cleaning
Caucasian rugs present a few specific challenges:
- Natural dye sensitivity — many older pieces use vegetable and natural dyes that can run if exposed to incorrect pH levels or aggressive detergents.
- Dense wool pile — the tight, chunky knotting typical of Kazak and Shirvan rugs traps grit and dust deep within the foundation, requiring thorough dust extraction before wet cleaning.
- Fringe and side-cord fragility — original selvedges and fringes on older Caucasian weavings can be delicate and need gentle, hand-based restoration rather than machine handling.
Our Caucasian Rug Cleaning Process in Godalming
At Oriental Rug Spa, we treat every Caucasian rug as an individual piece rather than running it through a standard wash. Our process typically includes:
- Dry dust extraction to remove deep-seated grit
- Dye stability testing before any wet cleaning begins
- Hand-washing using pH-balanced, wool-safe solutions
- Careful rinsing and controlled drying to prevent shrinkage or colour bleed
- Fringe cleaning and light restoration where needed
We regularly collect and clean Caucasian rugs from homes across Godalming, Farncombe, Shackleford, and the surrounding GU7 and GU8 postcodes, offering free local collection and delivery.
