Nepalese Rugs: A Guide for Owners
Nepalese rugs are among the most prized hand-knotted rugs in the world, rooted in a weaving tradition shared with neighbouring Tibet. Commercial rug production in Nepal grew significantly following the arrival of Tibetan refugees in 1959, and the craft has flourished ever since.
Materials
Nepalese rugs are typically made from the wool of Highland sheep, valued for its natural lustre and resilience. Many contemporary pieces also incorporate silk for added sheen, or bamboo silk and viscose for a softer finish. The pile wool is hand-spun, giving it both strength and elasticity.
Construction
The traditional knotting technique used in Nepal is the loop knot — wrapped around a metal rod and then cut open with a knife — which creates the characteristic soft, deep pile. Knot density typically ranges from 40 to 125 knots per square inch, and many rugs feature hand-carved areas of high and low pile to define the pattern.
Why Professional Cleaning Matters
The very qualities that make Nepalese rugs so desirable also make them particularly sensitive. The dense wool pile, natural dyes, and silk or bamboo silk content all require careful, specialist handling. Incorrect cleaning methods — including harsh detergents, excessive moisture, or aggressive machine washing — can cause colour bleeding, pile distortion, or irreversible fibre damage.
A professional rug cleaner with experience in hand-knotted pieces will assess the fibres and dyes before cleaning, ensuring your Nepalese rug is restored safely and its value protected for years to come.
