Turkish Ottoman Court Carpet

Court carpets produced in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were woven under control of the ruling houses and the rugs were given the names of these Dynasties, such as the Ottoman court carpet to the left.  The carpets were classed as Islamic art as the rulers were Muslim.  The workshops were staffed by craftsmen employed directly by the court.  However it did not prevent the weavers from engaging in other commercial activities.  Other workshops also produced similar types of rugs in design, but of lesser quality and lower prices.  There is a huge variance in quality of pieces woven in Ottoman and Mughal court styles.  More imitators copied the styles of the courts and eventually found their way to the towns and villages some distance away from the courts.
