Rugs are generally woven using two different knotting techniques. One is curvilinear, or asymmetrical, and the other is geometric or symmetrical. Asymmetrical knots are also referred to as Persian knots, and symmetrical knots as Turkish knots. Geometric knots are better suited to creating straight lines, which lend themselves to the formation of abstract stylised patterns. Geometric-style rugs have an immediate, almost primitive character, which reflects a simplified design. Geometric knots are typically used by nomadic tribal groups of weavers. The weavers use a horizontal loom which is easily transportable from one location to another. Their carpet designs are handed down through the generations. Geometric knots are used throughout Turkey, the Caucasus, and central Asia.
