Silk Hereke rugs from Turkey are one of the most intricately woven rugs in the world, encompassing beautiful designs with an extremely high knot counts reaching 800 per square inch. Woollen rugs are also woven but have a lower knot count in the region of 240 knots per square inch. These rugs are typically symmetrically woven with the traditional Turkish knot, whereas the higher knot count silk rugs are woven asymmetrically in a similar way to Persian rugs and carpets. You will quite often see an inscription in Latin in the border of the rug.
As with all hand knotted and machine made rugs, cleaning should never be attempted in the home using detergent based solutions which could compromise the dyes. Professional cleaning would be recommended to prolong the life and maintain the appearance of these wonderful pieces of floor art.
