Workshop Rug Design
Persian Qashgai
Workshop or city rugs have a much finer weave than those woven by tribal or village weavers. The designs are far more detailed and the motifs flow smoothly. Occasionally tribal weavers will copy workshop rugs. The Qashgai (see left) weavers are excellent at copying and reproducing the workshop designs. The Quashgai weavers are extremely are exremely skilled and this is not an easy task. Only on closer inspection is it possible to notice that the copied piece lacks the intricacy of the original workshop carpets. The distinction between village and workshop rugs is not always obvious. Qum carpets, for example, began weaving rugs in the 1930s with no factory. The looms were all installed in the weaver’s home. They worked under contract with an exact design to follow and the highly skilled weavers produced beautiful finely woven carpets.
