Silk rugs are easily identifiable due their lustre and sheen.  Over time the reflective sparkle will reduce gradually as the fibres pick up soil and dirt.  Some woollen rugs are made to look like silk by gaining a very shiny look to the pile.  This is acheive by a fairly aggressive lustre wash immediately after the rug has been woven.  Again this effect will reduce over time with general use.  Having the rug professionally cleaned will bring back the shine and reflective qualities of the silk.  Many rugs are now often woven using artificial silk known as rayon, viscose or mecerized cotton.  Contemporary rugs are often marketed as ‘Faux Silk’ or ‘Art Silk’ – in other words ‘Fake Silk’ or ‘Artificial Silk’.  Very high price tags are applied to these products but they really are a far cry from the original silk rugs.  They wear terribly and the pile can become easily matted and distorted beyond repair.

As with all hand knotted and machine made rugs, cleaning should never be attempted in the home using detergent based solutions which could compromise the dyes.  Professional cleaning would be recommended to prolong the life and maintain the appearance of these wonderful pieces of floor art.
