Persian Kashan

Persian Kashan
The Rich History of Kashan Rugs
Kashan rugs represent one of Persia’s most prestigious weaving traditions, originating from the ancient city of Kashan in central Iran. These exquisite Persian carpets have been prized by collectors and interior designers for centuries, renowned for their exceptional quality and intricate designs.
Origins and the Safavid Golden Age
The city of Kashan established itself as a major carpet-weaving centre during the Safavid dynasty (1501-1736), which marked the golden age of Persian rug production. During this period, the reign of Shah Abbas I proved particularly significant for Kashan’s reputation. Indeed, the city’s royal workshops created some of the finest carpets ever woven, many of which now reside in museums worldwide. Moreover, the famous Ardabil Carpet, one of the oldest dated Persian carpets, demonstrates the technical mastery achieved during this remarkable era.
Decline and Revival
Unfortunately, Kashan’s weaving industry suffered during the Afghan invasion of 1722 and subsequent political upheaval. Consequently, the tradition lay dormant for over a century. However, in the late 19th century, Kashan experienced a remarkable revival that would restore its reputation.
The 19th Century Renaissance
During this renaissance period, local merchants and master weavers re-established workshops throughout the city. Furthermore, they drew upon historical designs whilst simultaneously adapting to modern tastes and the growing international market. As a result, Kashan rugs regained their prestigious position in the global carpet trade.
Characteristics and Craftsmanship
Weaving Techniques
Traditional Kashan carpets are distinguished by their fine knotting density, typically using the asymmetrical Persian knot. Additionally, weavers employ high-quality wool on cotton or silk foundations, thereby creating durable yet luxurious pieces.
Design Elements
Classic Kashan designs feature central medallions, elaborate floral patterns, and rich colour palettes dominated by deep reds, blues, and ivory backgrounds. Therefore, these carpets remain instantly recognisable to collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Today, antique and vintage Kashan rugs remain highly sought after in the global marketplace, whilst contemporary Kashan weavers continue this centuries-old tradition of excellence.
