The rug wash process required can differ from rug to rug, so we offer various methods of rug cleaning, from full immersion washing to dry cleaning. All rug fibres can be cared for – wool, cotton, silk, viscose, rayon. We can carry out a pet stain and odour treatment, moth treatment and apply a fibre protection to resist against soiling and staining. We have extensive experience with cleaning antique rugs and rugs with unstable dyes and offer a rug repair service, including fringes, sides and pile reweaving.

Wool and Silk Rugs

Persian and Oriental rugs can be constructed in a number of fibres including wool, silk and cotton. The majority of rugs are woven using wool due to its hard wearing nature and its soft feel. Wool is also an environmentally friendly product as it occurs naturally. It also is warming in winter and can help keep you cool in summer. The woollen fibres are generally woven on to a cotton foundation, which means the rug’s fringes will be cotton. However, many tribal rugs will have a woollen foundation. The finer Persian carpets will be woven completely with silk or sometimes wool and silk. Silk can be used to pick out detail within a rug’s floral design, giving the outline of motifs a sheen. Over time the sparkle of the silk will diminish due to the fibres becoming soiled. This is the time to get the rug professionally cleaned. During the washing process the soiling will be removed and the silk will be restored to its former glory, shining once again. The restoration of silk fibres should never be performed in the home as this may result in permanent damage.

TIP – If you spill something on silk then absorb all moisture using plenty of kitchen towel. Apply water to dilute and staining and continue to absorb. Brush the silk in the direction of the nap – never rub against the pile. Place many layers of kitchen towel over the area and cover with a flat weighted object, replacing the kitchen towel twice daily until dry. Once the silk is dry brush against the pile to restore the softness and feel of thew silk.

As with all hand knotted and machine made rugs, cleaning should never be attempted in the home using detergent based solutions which could compromise the dyes. Professional cleaning would be recommended to prolong the life and maintain the appearance of these wonderful pieces of floor art.

We have two large Chinese rugs that hadn't been professionally cleaned ever and were 40/50 years old.Oriental Rug Spa replied promptly to my enquiry and collected, cleaned and delivered the rugs back within a couple of weeks.Both rugs look fantastic with restored colour and depth and all stains and musty smells gone.Excellent service and highly recommended!

Oriental Rug Spa was the last attempt to save our Berber rug that had a very distinctive smell of cat wee despite all our efforts with odor eliminators and a professional carpet cleaning at home. The smell was still there and on a hot day made the downstairs of the house smell unpleasant.We decided to try an off site carpet cleaning as the last resort. I was very pleased with customer service (everything from booking, collection and delivery was easy and on time) and I am very happy and impressed by the result. We gave this company a huge challenge, and they delivered on every aspect. We handed 5 Persian rugs to them that had previously been cleaned by non-professionals, and damaged in the process. They had been stored for approx 15 years, causing unmentionable fragrances to bloom. Dan is a master at cleaning carpets, and he brought all of our carpets back to life. I can highly recommend oriental rug spa. After speaking with Dan about my moth damaged Persian rug, he kindly went through the various cleaning and treatment options. He organized collection and the rug was cleaned and treated. Within a few weeks, the rug was delivered back to me by Dan. My rug feels wonderful & looks brilliant new.
