Mahi Tabriz Rugs

Persian Mahi Tabriz
A Persian Mahi Tabriz rug is a highly esteemed and classic design originating from the city of Tabriz in north-western Iran. The name is Farsi (Persian) for “Fish Tabriz”, which is the most accurate translation, though you will often see it referred to in English as the “Herati” pattern, especially in older texts.
Here are the key characteristics that define this beautiful rug:
The “Mahi” (Fish) Design
The most distinguishing feature is its intricate, repeating pattern. The central motif is a rosette (a flower-like medallion) surrounded by four curved leaves or fans. To many Persian weavers, these leaves strongly resemble the shape of a fish—hence the name “Mahi,” meaning fish. The pattern is then set against a field filled with delicate, scrolling vines and other floral elements. This creates a dense, all-over design that is both balanced and captivating.
Origin and Craftsmanship: Tabriz
-
City of Tabriz: As the name implies, these rugs are woven in Tabriz, one of the oldest and most important rug-weaving centres in Persia. The city is renowned for its high level of craftsmanship and innovation.
-
Construction: They are typically knotted on a cotton foundation, which provides a stable, flat surface. The pile is usually made from high-quality wool or, in more luxurious pieces, silk.
-
Knot Density: Tabriz weavers are known for their fine knotting. A high knot density (often denoted as KPSI – knots per square inch) allows for the incredible detail and sharpness of the Mahi pattern. You will often find them in a range from very good to exceptionally fine quality.
Colour Palette
Traditional Mahi Tabriz rugs often feature a classic and elegant colour scheme:
-
Ivory or Cream: Most commonly used for the background, making the detailed patterns stand out.
-
Deep Reds and Blues: These are used for the primary motifs (the rosettes, fish, and vines), providing a beautiful contrast.
-
Accents of Green, Gold, and Beige: Used to highlight details and add depth to the overall design.
Modern interpretations may use a wider variety of colours, but the classic ivory, red, and blue combination remains the most sought-after.
