Persian Quchan Rugs

Persian Quchan
Persian Quchan rugs, also known as Ghoochan or Khabushan rugs, hail from the town of Quchan in Iran’s Razavi Khorasan province, nestled in the northeast just northwest of Mashhad. This region has a storied history of rug weaving, with the rugs serving as a vital collection point for pieces crafted by Kurdish and Afshar tribes, whose descendants continue the tradition today. These rugs embody a vibrant tribal heritage, blending influences from Caucasian and Anatolian Kurdish designs, and are prized for their spirited, geometric motifs that evoke a sense of joie de vivre.
Typically hand-knotted using wool or goat hair for the foundation and wool pile, Quchan rugs boast an above-average knot density of around 120 knots per square inch, achieved with either Persian or Turkish knots. Their patterns often feature bold, repeating geometric elements like hooked diamond “Wheel of Life” medallions or latticed lozenges, rendered in naturally dyed hues such as warm reds, mellow yellows, apple greens, rusts, pale golds, coral, royal blue, and midnight blue. These designs create a harmonious yet spontaneous feel, making them a favourite among collectors of high-decorative tribal pieces.
Common sizes include runners (around 3 feet by 12 feet) and room-sized carpets (up to 8 feet by 10 feet), and they remain sought-after antiques from the early 20th century, adding character to any space.
