Silk Rug Cleaning in Farnham
Silk rugs are among the most exquisite and valuable floor coverings in the world — and among the most demanding to clean. At Oriental Rug Spa, we provide specialist silk rug cleaning for clients across Farnham, Wrecclesham, Rowledge, Tilford, and the wider Surrey countryside.
Why Silk Rugs Demand Specialist Care
Unlike wool, silk fibres are extraordinarily fine, with a natural lustre that gives these rugs their characteristic sheen. That same delicacy makes them highly susceptible to damage from incorrect cleaning methods. Harsh chemicals, excessive moisture, alkaline detergents, and rough handling can all cause irreversible colour bleed, pile distortion, or fibre breakdown — problems we regularly see in rugs that have been cleaned by generalist carpet cleaners.
Silk also reacts poorly to heat and high-pH solutions. Even a brief exposure to the wrong cleaning agent can cause the fibres to become brittle or permanently dulled. This is why silk rugs must always be assessed and cleaned by specialists with a genuine understanding of the fibre’s properties.
Our Silk Rug Cleaning Process
Every silk rug that arrives at Oriental Rug Spa undergoes a thorough pre-inspection. We assess the dyes for colourfastness, examine the pile for wear or damage, and identify the rug’s construction — whether it is a pure silk piece, a silk-on-cotton foundation, or an art silk (viscose) imitation — before any cleaning begins.
Genuine silk rugs are hand-washed using pH-neutral solutions specifically formulated for protein fibres. We control moisture throughout the process to prevent stretching or warping of the foundation, and rugs are dried in a controlled environment to preserve pile direction and structural integrity. The result is a rug that is thoroughly clean, refreshed in colour, and returned to you in the finest possible condition.
Silk Rugs We Clean
Our team regularly cleans silk rugs from across the major weaving traditions, including:
Persian silk rugs from Qom, Tabriz, and Kashan — renowned for their incredibly fine knotting and jewel-like colours. Turkish silk rugs from Hereke — often considered the pinnacle of the weaver’s craft. Chinese silk rugs — typically featuring floral or pictorial designs with a distinctive high pile. Indo-Persian silk and silk-on-wool pieces — combining traditional motifs with South Asian craftsmanship. Contemporary designer silk rugs — where dye integrity and pile condition are equally critical.
