Turkish rugs are among the most instantly recognisable of all handwoven rugs, prized for their bold geometric medallions, warm jewel-tone palettes, and the symbolic motifs woven into every piece. Unlike the more curvilinear designs typical of Persian weaving, Turkish rugs favour angular patterns and the double-knotted (Ghiordes) technique, which gives them a distinctive density and durability. Common weaving regions include Konya, Kayseri, Hereke and Milas, each associated with its own colour traditions and knot counts, from everyday wool village rugs to the exceptionally fine silk pieces produced in Hereke.

Because Turkish rugs are typically woven from wool, and occasionally silk, they need a cleaning approach that respects natural fibres and vegetable or lanolin-based dyes. Machine cleaning, high heat, or harsh chemicals can strip lustre, distort the pile, or cause colours to bleed — all of which reduce both the beauty and the value of the rug.

Our Turkish Rug Cleaning Process

1. Inspection and dye testing — every rug is assessed for fibre type, weave, wear patterns and colourfastness before any cleaning begins.
2. Dust extraction — deep, controlled agitation removes embedded grit and soil that ordinary vacuuming can’t reach, protecting the foundation of the weave.
3. Hand washing — the rug is gently washed by hand using pH-balanced, wool-safe solutions suited to the rug’s specific dyes and fibres.
4. Thorough rinsing — all cleaning residue is fully rinsed out, as leftover soap attracts dirt and can dull the pile over time.
5. Controlled drying — rugs are dried flat or hung in a temperature- and humidity-controlled space to prevent shrinkage, colour run or fibre damage.
6. Final grooming and inspection — the pile is groomed back into place and the rug is checked over before being prepared for return.
