Wool Rug Cleaning in Farnham
Professional wool rug cleaning service covering Farnham, Fleet, Farnborough and the surrounding Surrey area
Wool rugs are amongst the most enduring and rewarding floor coverings you can own. Prized for their natural resilience, warmth underfoot, and the rich depth of colour that only undyed or naturally dyed wool can achieve, a well-maintained wool rug will serve a household for generations. At Oriental Rug Spa, we provide specialist wool rug cleaning for clients across Farnham, Aldershot, Guildford, and the surrounding Surrey and Hampshire borders.
The Qualities That Make Wool Rugs Special
Wool is a uniquely self-regulating fibre. Its natural lanolin content repels surface soiling and gives the pile a subtle lustre that synthetic fibres cannot replicate. Whether you own a hand-knotted Persian or a flatwoven British wool rug, the pile is inherently durable — wool fibres can be bent thousands of times before breaking, making them ideally suited to areas of moderate foot traffic.
Wool also holds dye exceptionally well. The chromatic depth you see in a quality wool rug — the subtle shifts between abrash bands, the contrast of field and border — is a characteristic of the fibre itself, not simply the dye. That richness is worth protecting.
Why Wool Rugs Need Specialist Cleaning
Despite their durability, wool rugs are sensitive to the wrong cleaning methods. Excessive heat causes wool fibres to felt and shrink irreversibly. Alkaline detergents strip lanolin, leaving the pile dull and brittle. Aggressive mechanical scrubbing breaks the fibre tips and creates a worn, matted appearance. Overwetting leads to foundation rot — a slow deterioration that is often invisible until the rug begins to fall apart.
This is why we do not recommend domestic steam cleaners or high-street carpet cleaning machines for wool rugs. The risk of lasting damage is significant.
How We Clean Wool Rugs
At Oriental Rug Spa, every wool rug is cleaned by hand using a process developed specifically for natural-fibre textiles. We begin with a thorough dry soil removal, which extracts the particulate matter that settles deep into the pile and acts as an abrasive against the fibre over time. The rug is then washed using pH-neutral, wool-safe solutions that cleanse without stripping the fibre’s natural oils.
Rinsing is carried out with care to remove all cleaning residue, and the rug is dried flat in a controlled environment to prevent distortion, colour run, or mildew. The result is a rug that is genuinely clean — not surface-refreshed — with its pile integrity and colour intact.
